THE COMPASS JAZZ ORCHESTRA

CARMEN SINGS CARMEN-

Echoes of Carmen McRae

This is my very first solo big band recording without my Basie Brothers dragging me along for the fun!

I am absolutely over the moon about this project!

Contemporary Fusion Reviews

Sometimes I wish I could ask all of the instruments to leave the stage but for the bass, plus one other. The duo would clear the air and the result would be a more personal form of communication. As it happens, I have just discovered a new CD...

glenn kostur: the way of it (2017)

Album cover with yellow circular patterns and blue text band.

Glenn Kostur can play anything and once toured with legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. On this, he and his mates cruise confidently through a half-dozen engaging compositions along with evergreens. The rhythm smokes, as does guitarist Steve Kovalcheck on four tracks. As small-group sessions go, The Way of It is ship-shape and eminently seaworthy.

david caffey jazz orchestra: all in one (2018)

Abstract colorful album cover for David Caffey Jazz Orchestra's 'All In One'.

Caffey's charts are superb, the orchestra is letter-perfect, and All in One is consistently pleasurable from start to finish.

-Jack Bowers

erik applege: red skies (2009)

Album cover with a red sky and artist names in white text.

Denver-based jazz bassist Erik Applegate has strong enough chops to have performed with jazz heavies like Milt Jackson, Harold Mabern and Tom Harrell, but on Red Skies, his debut as a leader, Applegate shows he's a skilled and well-versed composer, as well.
